Project involvement while at Paul Archer Design

A Grade II* listed farmhouse in Lancashire, identified as a Building at Risk, restored and extended for contemporary use.

The existing house is repaired and reconfigured, reinstating original proportions and improving thermal performance. Previously infilled openings are reopened to restore symmetry and increase daylight.

New interventions are introduced as distinct contemporary additions.

A curved garden room in glass and zinc extends into the landscape, forming a new living space with long views across the surrounding fields.

A glazed link connects the main house and outbuilding, creating a light-filled dining space and establishing a clear separation between old and new fabric.

The new work is deliberately distinct in material and form, allowing the original building to remain legible within the landscape.

Internal discoveries within the existing structure are retained where found, contributing to the layered reading of the building over time.

The refurbishment is carried out with attention to existing material character, with breathable finishes reinstated to external walls.
